What is Trauma and why would it matter to me?

“So what is trauma?” I’m commonly asked. “Does that really qualify as trauma?” While we are often told to “just get over it,” or “move on already,” if we do not address the history that informs our experience, we can never really do either.  Physical and psychological trauma can be caused by a single event that is emotionally distressing or shocking, but ongoing, repeated exposure to stress or invalidating episodes can be just as impactful.

How Trauma affects our body and mind

Do you experience panic and not know why?  Do you find yourself feeling disconnected, numb, or unable to trust. Perhaps you experience upsetting emotions such as anger or panic, or feel that seemingly small issues cause a disproportionate emotional response. Have you ever responded to a situation with a fear that rationally didn’t make sense, but was present nonetheless?  You may even have chronic pain or hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. And while your nervous system wants to keep you out of harm's way, emotionally and physically these symptoms may prevent you from enjoying an engaged, happy, and fulfilling life.

Trauma – the impact over time

In highly emotional states, switching gears is difficult, and we often revert to autopilot to manage the present moment.  This can begin a cascade of negative thoughts/behaviors that lasts long past the triggering event. Many try to deal with these feelings through substance abuse, risk-taking, or isolation.  Perhaps your family has noticed that you have changed. Or, maybe you are avoiding people, places, and things.

Over time, these coping strategies can take a toll.  You may have formed core beliefs about yourself and accept them and your circumstance, as your reality.  Often this triggers a depressive episode, persistent anxiety, or other behaviors that may not make sense to your more logical self.  Therapy is an opportunity to shift perceptions, recognize strengths, and live in the present instead of having your life controlled by past fears.

Therapy for trauma can help

The goal of trauma counseling is to identify and address the underlying issues while reducing the symptoms resulting in a safer, happier, and more rewarding life.

I will accompany you through the stages of recovery and have extensive experience in treating trauma.  I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based modality. Based on your needs, I may draw from attachment theory, experiential therapy, visualization, or deep breathing to work through your emotions, build internal resilience, and shift away from negative core beliefs.

You don't have to face the symptoms of trauma alone. You can begin to feel better about yourself, your world and reclaim your life.
